I just heard this unbelievable true story. The celebrated Dutch paralympic athlete Monique Van Der Vorst, who was in a wheelchair for 12 years since the age of 13 after two separate accidents can now walk again after a car-crash which happened in spring this year! No one has any explanation to the miraculous recovery but she is no longer allowed nor interested to compete as a paralympiër, instead her ambition has become to run the marathons! Needless to say this amazing story is going straight to my inspiration board. What a positive energy to charge the new year with!

Today is Sunday and my treat day, but I’m not going to talk about treats with you. The exact opposite, as a matter of fact! Baby food, the most healthy and nutritious canned food in the world. I always bring a couple of jars with me whenever I’m on the field working, if there is no decent restaurant or grocery store nearby I wont let the fastfood taking control. Because we all know that you can find fastfood even in the middle of nowhere nowadays, so the convenience can be a fatal temptress! These products made for babies are basically mashed casseroles and various dishes which all taste deliciously … NOTHING!llol Yes, they are absolutely tasteless. Neither salty, nor sweet, nor hot or even bitter! They just taste like … baby food!lol But as tasteless as they are they are also “relatively” good options when you wanna eat healthy but have forgot to pack a lunch box and do not have access to fresh nutrition. However, I do not recommend you to eat these as regular meal replacements for weight loss, like some programs do! Fresh products should be your absolute ambition and top priority, in terms of nutrition.

“Catfish” is an impeccable piece of work, especially considering that it is purely documentary and from what I understand in no sense fictional. Something which I did not know when I started watching it. The narrative of the film, the portrayal of the characters and the building of tension through actual interaction are incomparable to any documentary I have ever watched. In fact all the twists and turns seem so perfectly timed and engaging that I thought it was a faux documentary I was watching! But as the story unfolded I realised that this was one purely accidental, but nonetheless brilliant, take on the pathology of social networking. “Catfish” is creepy, funny and tragic in a very natural but cinematically unconventional way. Having you relating to the emotions that are evoked throughout the film and the message that is conveyed at its surprising end. I highly recommended this to anyone who is spending time socialising online. Of the two facebook movies out this year, this is the one to watch!

As I’ve mentioned before most boyband resurrections or reunions are no more than ridiculous attempts to squeeze out the last drops from the old cash cows. Even cows that in some cases are no more than carcasses! Therefore they almost always fail. The British Take That is an exception however, since they reappeared after almost a decade with a lot of integrity and dignity.

Meaning that they might have the same members and name as the manufactured boyband they once were, essentially however they are different. Their image and music reflect now their actual ages and personalities. Its more sublime and mature.

While the group reunited officially a few years back and have since then had a rather successful career as a quartet, they are now once again joined by the long lost member of theirs, namely Robbie Williams, for an original line-up reunion album and tour. Robbie left the band with a lot of arrogance, immaturity and a feud with mainly the lead singer Gary Barlow (however they recently showed that the bad blood is gone by singing a duet about their relationship), and although he was vocally the less credible member he managed to beat the others as the only spin-off solo career that took off with a success! Mainly due to his charismatic persona and sense for the right type of material. And even more ironically, mainly due to the darker side of the same persona, his solo career lost drive and viability just when the new Take That’s career relaunched! So in a way the tables turned, and now the once cocky Robbie has returned to his brothers in band with a more humble tail dangling between the legs. The result is an album titled “Progress” and a single called “Flood”, a very well-made song and video that sums up the style and strengths of both Robbie and Take That altogether.

I’ve said it before, there are amateur directors out there that make wonders with relatively small budgets. As long as the vision and ambition are there, talent will find means for expression. Especially in these days if technical accessibility and possibility. Garth Edwards has done the effects to his “Monsters” on his personal computer in his bedroom, for God’s sake! I finally got to watch it and must say that it was such a pleasant surprise to me, for the same reasons it was a disappointment to many who went to see an action movie about monsters.

Because “Monsters” is more than a “Cloverfield” without that shaky sensation. It has an actual substance that has nothing to do with monsters and is more balanced than any drama out there. Not to mention an excellent casting and a comprehensive dramaturgy, relatively unknown actors with chemistry who can carry characters and a story. That is more than one can say for “Skyline” and other movies of this genre.

Sorry for the two days of complete absence my friends, as you know I’m currently on the field and these past 48 hours have been like moving while being buried up to the waist in the snow! Both figuratively and literally speaking! So much to do next week … eh, its weekend now so lets focus on fun shall we. Wanted to recommend you the seventh studio album of Redman called “Redman presents … Reggie”. I’ve never been big on rap (love Hip Hop as a culture though) but Redman and his ragged way of keeping things real (just compare his MTV CRIBS episode to all others and you’ll know what I mean) has always captured my attention. In this new album he has dropped his alter-ego Redman and appear as Reggie (his birth-name). He is more personal and softer around the edges, more melodic and commercially appealing as well yet keeping that vocal Edge. I am loving this production, been constantly on replay these couple of days.

Swedish MMA and the Iranian factor

As I’ve written before I have been incorporating a lot of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) conditioning and speed training in my routine and it is paying off like no other exercise. But it’s not only my passion and admiration for MMA that is growing more and more every day, the sport itself is reportedly the single rampantly growing sport in the world at the moment. And it is particularly interesting to mention that the MMA scene in Sweden is more or less led by Iranians! From the arrangers of the biggest events (Supreme Challenge) to the websites covering the sport (Fightplay, Kimura and MMAnytt) are all charged by that leading Iranian factor.

Not to mention the many Iranian contenders such as Navid Yousefi, Hamid “Akira” Corassani (among many others) and in particular Reza “MadDog” Madadi whose currently the hottest name of the Swedish MMA and is having his UFC prospects foreseen by Bloody Elbow! As an Iranian-Swede, as well as an MMA aficionado, I’m proud of this factor. Hell, even David “The Brazilian Swede” Bielkheden is a fan of our meatiest dish! Hehe

Recent years of mine have been double packed and booked, in terms of work and studies for a second degree. Not to mention all the projects I commit and attend to on my spare time (one might think that you actually have to have a spare time, in order to fill it with something). But the upcoming summer is the saviour that I’m waiting for. My studies and half of my projects will come to an end, allowing me to finally exhale. After six days of hard training and healthy eating Sundays are my “treat day”. I don’t have a sweet tooth (thankfully), but there is one pastry I can not say no to and that is my dear mother’s heavenly “naan-khaameyi”! She makes them the way I like it, bite-size, not so sweet and with toasted tops. When I was a kid she used to make hundreds of them for me to take to school and let me tell you that my Swedish friends went nuts for them! They sold out each time my class had a sweet-stand on the corner of the school-yard. These buns of delight which you behold above are currently sitting on the kitchen counter and flirting with me, so if you excuse me I’m gonna go for a feast. By the way, sorry if I can’t taarof you any, but even if I could I doubt that I would!lol Cuz these are all mine! Aaaall mine! Muwahahaha!

A while ago I had a very interesting conversation with a dear friend and colleague and we touched upon the subject of rivalry. Rivalry is a reality, whether one likes it or not. It is a constantly present and current feature in life and every profession, so for what it’s worth I thought sharing my two cents with you. The philosophy that has taken me to where I am and will take me to where I will be. I am en extremely competitive person, I think most people that have ever worked with me can vouch for that. But I doubt that any of them has ever felt that I’ve been competing with them. Even though they might have been competing with me! To me rivalry is about competition, but its mainly a race within. And every race is about focus on own potentials and progress, not your rivals. Glance by all means at the context and the contenders before the start shot, but do not assess the situation and your position. Instead you should always keep in your best shape and fully prepared, as if you are to meet the greatest challenge of your life! So once the race is on and ongoing, you will not mind what the others do. Any glance at your left or right means deviation from within and a friction in your attention, leading always to a loss of performance. You should not care about who you are up against, instead face your own expectations, your inner contender and rival. Lock your mental target in an eagle eye and give your best to beat your own best, regardless of who actually wins the race. Self-realisation is achieved by pushing your own limits because you can, not because you have to. Realising and maximising your potentials is the only, and I emphasise, the only way that you can be in a league of your own. Not by underestimating or overestimating others, but by constantly challenging and surpassing your own self!

The end of a family affair

Ace of Base, the Swedish wonder act from the 90’s is back. This time with two new and much younger female members and a completely new album, after years of BEST OF release and cash in. This new constellation has however not been completely legit and without internal conflict, since one of the original members namely Jenny, who earlier this year launched a rather unsuccessful solo-career, opposed the idea of using the groups’ brand name with new members. The two male members, of which one is Jenny’s own brother (Ace of Base was a family affair) went ahead and referred to their first contract for the right to use Ace of Base’s name on their own. Their unique original logo however seems to have been removed!

I have to say that I was never a fan of the act and never understood how their minimalistic Euro-disco/reggae became such international success. “Happy Nation” is according to Guinness record book the best selling debut album of history with its 23 million sold copies! The new songs however I rather enjoy, they are still 90’s Euro-disco oriented but the compositions and arrangements are cleaner, catchier, climactic and more in line with their “Beautiful Life”.

Something which is rather masculine both in terms of historic attribute and fashion aesthetics is the bow tie. It has also gone through a serious revival lately via the preppy style and can be worn with any kind of suit or even street clothing, as long as there is some kind of shirt involved. But it is also something which I would never wear casually since I associate them with the book generation geeks!lol Neither would I wear them formally for that matter unless its on very special occasions which require a tuxedo. In my mind a bow tie is black and sleek, it belongs to tuxedos and is worn by James Bond!lol That is the only way that this fashion relic can be granted some sort of dignity. So all the floral and colourful bow ties currently flying around like butterflies in the streets are to me nothing but accessories for geeks and clowns!lol

Just wanted to recommend you one of the funnier television series I’ve seen lately. I haven’t watched the movie “Outsourced” but I suspect this series being loosely based on it. What makes this show so charming is its humble attitude and the fact that each and every actor genuinely contributes to the fun (especially Rizwan Manji). A good cast chemistry in other words and bite-size episodes make “Outsourced” a short weekly trip to a pretend India made out of funny stereotypes. It should also be mentioned that the very same stereotypes have steered up a lot of emotions and protests here and there! Some of my Indian friends are very critical while the majority can relate to it and find it hilarious. I’m sure it would have a similar (or reverse?) outcome if it was a show about Iranians in Iran.

I personally make a difference between Hollywood’s ignorant orientalism and tongue-in-cheek exaggerations. I see no harm in a show that creates caricatures out of basically everyone, Indians as well as Americans, in a manner that is clear in its purpose. What I see harm in however, are shows that try to confirm prejudices in order to come across as serious and credible. “24″ is a perfect example! So either way, “outsourced” is worth a watch.

Under the Burden (of a Nation)

Every once in a while I receive e-mails from people who happen to via google stumble upon a painting of mine, painted and posted our years ago. The painting is called “Under the burden (of a nation)” and is my homage to late Dr. Mossadegh. It’s acrylics painted on canvas, however the ambition was to achieve the chalk-on-tinted paper sketch effect. Much like a vintage photo, a fading moment caught in the memory of history. It took exactly 10 years in the making, from the day the idea was born and till it got processed and painted. Thus this piece belongs to my private collection and I do not intend to sell it, but I’m flattered and thank you for your interest.
